Does anyone still buy vinyl?
I'm curious...
Does anyone out there still spend their hard earned (or centrelink) coin on wax?
Do you hold on to your old rekkids or do you sell them?
Word on the street is that no shops interested in buying oldies anymore..

no.
I stopped buying vinyl just over 8 years ago.

Yes, but only so I can invite all my laptop DJ mates around to my house and laugh at it together as a group.

I still have all my vinyl.
I'll still buy songs I really, really like on vinyl. But they have to be really good.

^^ I know the local aussie post, parcel delivery guy due to the same (musicstack & ebay, anyway)
If what I want is available on vinyl, I will buy it. If it's something I have to have and it's not on vinyl, I will buy it on cd (if I can't get a burn somewhere ).

Re: Does anyone still buy vinyl?
Only buy vinyl if I can't buy it/find it on MP3 (usually bootlegs, edits, old tunes etc). Still a bit pissed off that a lot of artists have listed their back catalogue on download sites, my vinyl collection took a bit of a hit when that happened...

Re: Does anyone still buy vinyl?
I still buy vinyl, and I know a lot who still do also. It's far more satisfying for me than an mp3 download (and why would you buy 320 mp3s anyway instead of getting FLAC?).
It's also a worthy investment, as my collection has grown in value quite nicely now. Only ever buy records when they're new/cheap and they often hold that value for a long time unless the tune itself is shit.
Have had quite a few discussions with the Redeye guys about cricket while sorting out orders too, always dependable and reliable.
Also a fact that vinyl reproduces sound better than digital forms (http://www.howstuffworks.com/question487.htm)

i don't buy vinyl, it's heavy and expensive. when you play out the turntables are usually really old and shit and haven't been serviced in years. cd's or serato are much easier...

Most people have download limits so it's hard if u buy alot of tunes online regularly. 320s sound fine anyway!Extortion wrote:why would you buy 320 mp3s anyway instead of getting FLAC?)

I still buy vinyl. Got a mad addiction.
Dont buy current tracks as much tho - moreso rare and old stuff, or full albums that ill listen to rather then DJ with.
Love hitting up vinyl stores - nothing beats diggin. Sad to see that most are closing down now

I've gone to the darkside too and play serato now. There are a quite a few tunes which ill only ever have on vinyl so i play them as they are. But for the most i am strictly digital.
We all know the story about 12" sounding better etc. But im sure not many of us admit we can't really tell much of a difference between a wav and 12". Even if we do... it shouldn't really spoil listening to the tune anyways.

Re: Does anyone still buy vinyl?
A mate of mine put the dj vs vinyl thing in context pretty well recently, he's been playing techno for about 15 years or so and just can't justify adding another bookshelf full of soon to be forgotten records to his house every year or two. I think he may have bought an IKEA TB hard drive instead.
Techno and a lot of other dj music is supposed to be all about the future and technology so, the irony of vinyl being a techno purist's choice... is like rain on your wedding day.
I still buy about as many records as ever. I still waste hours a week digging and many more contributing to discogs.
I hardly by any vinyl for gigs any more though. Certainly no breaks records anyway

Yep, I do.. I don't buy many new albums, and I don't DJ, but I'd rather get something physical than only on mp3. I liken it to printing out photos or just keeping digital copies, there's something nice about having a physical copy especially with the big cover when there is awesome art. I also like the act of putting on vinyl and the sound of it. I find that I lose CDs occasionally, but I've never lost a record.

So this leads me to my next question....
if you still buy vinyl, why do you buy online/overseas and not from your local store?
This is basically the detriment/downfall of Australian independent record stores...
you can backorder through stores, you can get white labels etc... whats the big difference?

central / hear now closed up. collectors stocks nothing i want, wax museum is dope but dont buy much hip hop these days , n i still pop by north side to grab random tunes

Local stores have bugger all selection for my tastes. They also charge a lot when it's cheaper over seas. Only local one i buy from is noise xchange - http://www.noisexchange.com/bonsai wrote:So this leads me to my next question....

I do enjoy physically looking through records, but i can't justify paying the prices for something I'm just not that into. As for getting them to order, i've never actually tried or thought of that. May give that a go. If i'm gonna go that route it would be easier to cut out the middleman i'm sure. Any recommendations for a record store that would be most likely to do this?
Seeing as we're going down this area, how about a list of all stores stocking electronic vinyl?
Wax Museum near flinders station (dunno what that street is called)
Alley Tunes near Glenferrie station in Hawthorn
DMC Records in south yarra
More?
Re: Does anyone still buy vinyl?
I will ALWAYS buy Vinyl.. 2nd hand stuff however is not so popular anymore.. Most people who love vinyl will already have most of the old stuff they need so will only buy new stuff, and there defiantly are not enough people getting into it to keep 2nd hand sales alive..
Even on the front of new records it is a sory sight.
With most of MElbournes record stores going bust. DMC pretty much the only one left.. Long gone are the days of wlaking from record store to record store to chat to shop keepers and hear the next big thing. Nt you ca only do this in infornt of a computer!!
DJing is losing its culture!!!
Having said this.. I do play digital too.. Bu much prefere the realiability of a SOLI piece of WAX!!

Re: Does anyone still buy vinyl?
Pressing vinyl has become an expensive business card really.
Good if you want to impress magazines, and a select few of the top DJs who still play it (most of them don't)
We're down to pressing 300 for Future Perfect, and only 500 for Hardcore Beats and Wicky Lindows.
A few hardcore punters out there still buying them (mostly in Germany and the US), and I guess they will be more of a rarity in the future.
Bit of a shame, but there's more money in digital now.
I don't agree that DJing is losing its culture at all, it's just got more interesting and more competitive.

Re: Does anyone still buy vinyl?
More and more non-electronic music is being released on vinyl, and there are heaps of classic albums, across most genres that are continually being released. So whilst djs are abandoning glorious vinyl, other music lovers are keeping it alive and well.

What i meant by this was the days of DJs going to record store to hear the tunes, chat to others aboyut the music. And walk form store to store.. It was a huge part of DJing and what made it very appealing. Being vinyl hunter and enthsist not being able to go anywhere for my vinyl now SUCKS!!!
And in terms of an international playing vinyl.. It is pretty much unherd of these days. Which sucks arse.. Carl cox is the only one I can think of.

meh, I'm in two minds about the whole thing... I hate burning CDs, but I also Hate setting up traktor.. .I've also found it to be unreliable, like at clubs with shitty decks... also, at mercat once I could not get behind the mixer to plug in cables had to use CDs which then limited me to old tunes as I haven't burnt all my latest ones.
pretty sucky, I'm actually not sure which direction to go in tbh.

I still troll through op-shops and Northside always extracts $100 from my pocket...and that's just 7's.
My 7 inch cooler bag is bursting these days and it's fun busting out a 7's set from time to time, but digital is so much more fun for me these days.
That said, I have a shipping container with 2,000 records currently on it's way over from CA. My wife is not happy, but I am. Now my collection will be complete.
Needs bigger house now.
