Lets discuss Acoustics? Where's, Why's, Personal Experience?

Post by LuKo »

OK so am building some bass traps in a few weeks with a mate, figure we buy rthe material bulk, and some wood, some mesh and get to knocking up a few bass traps as shown in DIY tuts all over the web.

Just wondering what some of you may have tried in the past, materials used? from my research I assume that Corning 703, or 705 fibreglass is the best and cost effecient? any thoughts?

at the moment I am looking at bass traps for the corners of my square room with some smaller sqaure diffusers on the side walls and maybe two in the middle of the back wall

my room looks like the one in the first link except more square and put a set of decks where the back chairs are, and minus the drum kit (sheesh!)

Mate, if you've got a few questions go see Marshall at vinyl warning, as he's already done what your planning. It would well worth your while doing so. He's the one that gave me the link to eathan winter's site.

At less expensive method besides putting in bass traps, which is a very good idea, the simple idea of hanging a few rugs up on the wall, leaving about a one inch gap between the wall and the rug. It will dampen the reflections that you would be currently getting.

Yes i confiscate glow sticks off wankers that think that they are a good idea to take out in public, so after this many years, i have enough to light my studio....WTF!!!!!!! Death to all glow sticks!!

Luko, mate, i'd be interested in the batts as well, but get a price and physical dimensions of a single batt so i know how many i would need for my studio. Cool.

great site.. they have got the cool angled gear racks i have been looking for, but smaller cooler looking ones

cheers

but those real traps are expensive for what they are, considering what we will make will be made of exactly the same stuff..and should cost at least half that

for the best introduction to acoustics for the home, great to get your head around soundproofing (not much on stuff like basstraps/studio treatment though)

www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/noise

CitySounds2

check it let me know what you reckon... I wrote a lot of it...

"CitySounds2 has been designed to assist residents and industry by providing information on acoustic design in an accessible, interactive format.

Using web design and audio software to create a virtual CBD living space, the program lets you hear real sounds of Melbourne, and learn ways to reduce noise levels entering into your home. "

haha yeah that is really really cool man!

and looking at what you rplay in your sig, i'd say you probably run into all sorts of trouble with venues and their set dB policies / limiters etc...

all put in place to save themselves getting huuuuge fines

ever play at Republika before it closed last year, that was probably the worst example i have ever heard..

Yes I have... perfect example of what not to do...

buy a venue with absolutely shit soundproofing, and expect to put on dance parties! nuts

great cuase studies on why venues need eduation before putting the splash into big PA gears

strangely enough i dont have too many issues, largely becuase I just play quieter if thats whats needed... the other big issue being DJs who dont have any respect for the limits in place...

its partly the venues fault for providing and envionrment where the DJ expects to play loud, partly the DJs fault for not being considerate of the situation...
