Visuals at Shadow
Visuals at Shadow
Although there are differing views on Shadows performance, I'd assume we can all agree the visuals looked rad?
Why don't more events, even club nights do something similar?
All Shadow was using for visuals were clips made for his tunes (basically music videos) which were burned onto DVD to use with the DVDJs and some colour matched lighting.
I realise most venues don't have DVDJ's as standard and are in no rush to replace their cdj's, but I'd love to see this kind of thing more often.

video mixers are fucking cool
i used to play with one for teriyaki at hi fi a long time ago
we had a data projector with real time overhead too, so you could take pics of the crowd and project it real time
was awesome.
the projectors the used at shadow last night were high end tho,
serious fucking output.....but they made the shitty venue so so much better...
i still missed the visuals of him and what he was doin tho...

Do any clubs actually have DVDJ's?
Is the only advantage of DVDJ's over CDJ's their ability to output video as well as audio?
last time i checked DVDJ's are about $5000+ for one. A video mixer is about a grand and a decent projector 2000+
I'ts a pricy set up thats for sure....
^^ those look good, but I'd say they were 100X better IRL (for those that weren't there)
James (VJ Tripamine) uses a DVDJ (I think he hires it) and video mixer with a PC as well. The projector last night would've been FUCKING $$EXXY very high output + those wide-angle lenses aren't cheap either.
The advantage of a dvdj that is used by the actual DJ is great as he can then have audio tracks with synced video (like a film clip). Where as a seperate VJ can't really do that.
I saw Jeff Mills use a DVDJ at Metro a few years ago. It was radness (not as good as shadow though)

yeah they were totally awesome.
visuals that are well crafted and fairly insync with the music make a world of difference, especially when it's too packed to move.
he had his sampler pad hooked up to video loops of an instructional drumming video at the forum all those years ago. fucking awesome.
i would imagine it's pretty expensive just to have the video created, especially for a weekly club night when the same clips would be played on a regualr basis. the problem is that it's an extra cost for promoters and isn't really going to attract enough extra punters to make it worthwhile =(

There's no justice, just us.
i think stray has a point ... but my perspective is visuals are expensive and as I've said before, they don't bring heads in the door.
HOWEVER - Ghetto Fabulous used to (they may still do) have a great visual guy who worked off one laptop and did some cool stuff ... so it shows you don't need loads of people/equipment/spend to make it good.
however from a patron point of view visuals can be a bit overwhelming for a whole night

Oh snap. Ableton 6 has video support.
"Like WAV or MP3 files, QuickTime movie files can be dragged from the Live Browser into the Arrangement, where they show up as clips. A video window displays the clip's video, which can also be shown full screen on a second monitor..."
So.. I could DJ and VJ at the same time!

That's NAS (No Attention Span) by the way. Don't spoil the illusion.Zero Hour wrote:JohnnyNostars does visuals at Soulskool......plops the Laptop on stage and plugs into a projector + we have a big screen on stage. Looks wicked and its really not as compicated as its been made out to be....a little effort goes a long way. The venue layout helps though.
It's really more of stuff to look at than a complement to the music, like what y'all describe Shadow's stuff to be. It is fun though!
DVJs cost farken heaps!!. other options aren't so bad but the main problem is the projection. Good screens cost heaps and are a bitch to set up (if you get a venue big enough) and good projectors cost even more. Shadow's visual set-up might be "simple but effective" but would cost way more than any local crew could afford... having said that, alot of VJs are doin their best
did you check out shadow james? if not then you should. very impressive.tappy wrote:DVJs cost farken heaps!!. other options aren't so bad but the main problem is the projection.
