Aussie Hip Hop
I cant find a thread, and I love aussie hip hop, well some of it.
It definately has a style of its own, and I like that the rhymes are about aussie stuff and not bitches and blunts.
I mean lets face it, who the fuck really smokes blunts here, though there is a LOT of bitches at certain locations.
some acts i like
Tzu - kind of re defined hip hop and made it more accessible with great beats and good rhymes. joel and pip used to read rhyming dictionaries to each other in school! and it has paid off, thoough i heard the other day that they are no more. going to do other things etc. prolly good as they did get a bit too commercial in the end imho.
curse ov dialect - i used to hang out with these guys ten years ago, damn they used to fuck shit up, throw cat meat at vegan benefit gigs, i did a show with them at the old scubar and they pretty much covered the entire venue in those tiny styrofoam balls and cucumber juice. and i must admit, back then they were fucknig revolutionary. however, i do think that they found their formula and stuck to it and whilst they were the first aussie act signed to a US label (i heard) lately they seem to be just doing the same ol same ol thang that worked ages ago.
hilltops - I love em. Part of it is cos they are from Adelaide, part of it is that they did an album with the symphony orchestra, busting genres, love it, and part of it is they are just great rhymes, and well, they are a bit hot too.
maya jupiter - love what this lady does for hip hop here. The album of 'The hip hop show' has some really dope indigenous acts on it too.
urthboy - i like his beats and rhymes but sometimes he annoys me and i dont know why. still worthy tho.
downsyde - LOVE these guys. more dark than the herd, who are good but still a bit 'pedestrian' for my liking.
horror show - funny, i love these guys, like bogans with mics, quite endearing really thought im sure they dont want to hear that
combat wombat/illzilla - conscious hip hop with messages about whats actually going on in this country. good.
more please? discuss? give me more albums to buy!
that said - I am tired of hip hop crowds. every gig i go to, is full of wankers and slurries. De La @ The Espy was the clincher for me,
I love hip hop but I really really fucknig hate the people that go to the gigs usually. How to fix this? Napalm? IQ testing upon entry?

Re: Aussie Hip Hop
I absolutely love hip hop, but I have NEVER heard an Aussie MC I liked. It just doesn't work for me.
Re: Aussie Hip Hop
SMB Hardy.
GK, my faves: Astronomy Class, Koolism, Pez (not Pegz), Bliss N Eso, Pegz, Muph & Plutonic (& Plutonic Lab), True Live, Phrase, Jase, The Herd, Downsyde... hmmm... others, can't think - need to be near my records and CD's.
Bliss N Eso and Pegz beats bore you? Wow... each to their own, but I thought the production on Bliss N Eso's first LP was amazing! And Pegz (being Obese's main man) uses the creme de la creme of Aussie producers like Plutonic and Jase - he has some killer beats IMO.

'eltham is my manhattan' = trying way way to hard

Re: Aussie Hip Hop
Astronomy Class: 'Exit Strategy'. Nice, dub-reggae skip-hop.
Bliss N Eso's latest offering isn't a blue cover... It's called 'Flying Colours'... looks like this:
Not trying to argue a point, just thinking maybe you've mixed them up - as they're from Sydney, so the Eltham line doesn't ring true, although perhaps they did say it - I can't recall.
I think they're pretty talented MC's actually. Sometimes the content isn't bang on, but they're well crafted and well delivered.

Oh, and Pez is one of the best lyricists doing the rounds out here at present IMO.
Re: Aussie Hip Hop
Both Astronomy Class albums rip, Bo. Elefant Traks = the biz!!!
I know it's dancehall/reggae, but Mista Savona rips, too.
Still think Resin Dogs rock some dope hiphop, too. Last time I played with Katch, he was droppin heaps of Aussie hiphop. Man supports this country.
The Mouse Outfit are pretty dope. Check em on My Space and if you haven't downloaded the free EP from Psyde Projects yet, tsk tsk. It's so good. Go to their My Space page...320 MP3 EP of some dope beats n rhymes. Local, too. Uri, my hat's off to ya.
How come everyone's left off Mass MC??? He was/is the true Aussie revolutionary. I still got the CD Mix that Spiesdogg gave me in 2001 with that BBQ song on it. Pisser.

Re: Aussie Hip Hop
direkt, sorry you are right, im thinking of muph and plutonic. thats the blue one, and the eltham line!
have not got a copy of flying colours, i should go buy huh?
astronomy class - will get! I do like most things on elefant traks label...
have not heard of mouse oufit, will hunt em out on myspazz
nor Mass Mc, nor Drapht...can has one song to listen to linky linky Obwankenobi?
and to Hardy - I swear I know the sentiment, but you just need the right combo of beats and actual lyrical mastery, not just 'some aussie MC' cos honestly, 90% of them are shite imo. Do you not like any of these dudes mentioned?

99% of aussie hip hop is arse IMO (well all i've heard on jjj and bits and pieces on RRR). Just lame lyrics about bullshit with exaggerated accents. Hilltop hoods suck super mario ozwog balls!
TZU and True Live are quality live acts and really nice lads i must say. Really haven't heard that much more aussie hip hop that i've liked although I heard a couple of tracks by some guy called Seth Sentry on jjj the other day. Not bad. Some nice beats and simple honest lyrics. (Think he's touring with Pez at the moment)

loads of great hip hop does not get any commercial airplay here. (well RRR not commercial but still)
Re: Aussie Hip Hop
I know where Hardy is coming from... but you've gotta get past it.
Sure, some dudes sound like they're taking piss putting the Oz accent on too thick, but there's some great Aussie MC's out there and the scene is only getting stronger.
Re: Draft. I love his track 'Jimmy Recard' - awesome.
Bliss N Eso - yeah give it a go. Their first LP, "Flowers In The Pavement" is pretty good. Bliss did most of the production and it was mixed in the studio next to Jay-Z in NYC. Beats are pretty nice.
Pez, do it.

Re: Aussie Hip Hop
I just ain't heard much good stuff and i've seen and heard alot of acts since aussie hip hop came out of the closet and became "cool". They all just put on this whole act and fake their accents and... well they have got nothin on the UK and US hip hop that's all i can say.

TBH - the quality of Oz hip-hop is growing in tandem with the support of it.

Re: Aussie Hip Hop
but aussie hip hop aint really even 'cool' yet man.
Obese told me they wanted to get on commerical stations like kiss fm etc bad but werent sure how to do it.
And I dont know either. I dont know if the plebs are ready to accept the accents cos they have grown up on a steady diet of yankee hip hop.
I think most UK hip hop Ive heard is shite, and there is a big differecne between west/east hip hop in the US, and Rap is different to hip hop too.
Pretty generalistic statements! If you hate it, move on cos this thread is for lovers thanks!
direkt- so which album do i get, first one or second one?! and yeah i have some pez floating around on an external somewhere, will listen again...
edit - word direkt. fan the flames, feed the fire.

Re: Aussie Hip Hop
This is probably the same problem with me. I guess I haven't dug very far, but the way it's represented on radio is not good. I have really tried to dig it, but I just can't get into it. It just sounds wrong. And yes, Hilltop Hoods are horrid.andy_hoffman wrote:99% of aussie hip hop is arse IMO (well all i've heard on jjj and bits and pieces on RRR). I've dropped info on this forum about a duo called Polo Club that I manage but no-one seems to care too much. I personally think they are bringing something new to the local landscape. It may not be revolutionary in terms of the global scene but they are definitely pushing their own style...
we got the album mastered in LA by Dave Cooley who has mastered albums by Madlib, Dilla and many more.
there's a bunch of music from their debut album and some remixes that they have done here - http://www.myspace.com/poloclub

@Hardy if you don't like aussie mc's i strongly advise you check out Plutonic Labs - Codes Over Colours...really really good instrumentals. Also artists Brothers Stoney and of course the fantastic Hermitude are highly recommended.
TBH haven't heard much this year but Two Toes sound good, Joe New is one of the best MC's in this country.
Also don't mind locals Low Budget.

came across this little gem, sooooo damn funky.
Re: Aussie Hip Hop
Low budget are great and about to blow up i think.
I would rather listen to an australian MC ryme with his own accent rather than trying to put on a US accent and ryme. Before the hilltops blew up they used try and mimmick US accents, then one day some guy in adelaide asked them why they were tring to put on US accents and they didnt know, its well documented.
Anyone heard Bias's new Album Aerosol Era? i like it.

Ozi Batla is no.1 for content.
That is something I love about listening to Aussie Hip Hop on the headphones. The content, on a good record, is about here and now stuff I can relate to.
After all Hip Hop did come from a RnB tradition of singing about the troubles and celebrations of the day right? (other than the getting the party started right bit).
Could go on and on about the evolution is has been through, the accent debate, the splinter groups that have now emerged, the distinct sound Aussie stuff has with a live band feel, the importance of Hilltops for the rest of the scene, the face that teens now consider themselves ‘hip hop’ but not necessarily following any US crews but local crews instead and how that just would never of happened for the masses before the last 3 or 4 years. The scene has come a bloody long way since the raps about driving ‘my Holden over the Westgate’.
Blaa blaa blaa.

i make hip hop, but to be honest hate most of it...not enuff rawness anymore, going to most hiphop shows is like a casting call for home and away most of the time, mans need to start getting pulled of the stage moretime, too many moon, star and unicorn rappers
stuff like true live makes me cringe hard, kinda embarassing, its hip hop for non-hip hop fans and festival monkeys, no offence it its ur thing
but yeah, as Steve said, M-Phazes is no.1 for beats, and when u got people like preemo, 9th wonder, just blaze, pete rock and bare others co-signing you it wont be long before he's one of the top boy producers worldwide...
personally from oz, i like stuff like Gargoyle, Rhys etc that kind of stuff...can totally see why people would hate it tho, its very dark and grimey and hard to relate to if u aint grown up on a similar lifestyle
