Got to serious. Breaks crowds loved the party, serious music is for crowds full of blokes in hoodies, sausage fests. :smt006 Breaks got to serious for it's Melbourne crowds.

That said I have not bought a new breaks album or mix in some time so I don't know what is getting put out there.

Breaks crossed too many boundaries in the end IMO.

It used to be a niche.

Then it just sounded like generic "dance music".

It used to. Some of it still does, I guess.

TBH - fuck it, it lost most of its appeal on me. The older stuff still sounds good though.

I just remember a transitional period where it started to sound more and more housey.

At least DNB remained pure.

Any of you guys think Breaks will make it big again? Or is it destined to be dead in the melb scene?

If it does re-emerge it will come again from where it did the first time. Closer to the hip hop side of things, sped up actual break beats with plenty of sub bass and hip hop style MC's with plenty of historical reference, electro bounces and hands in the air summer vibes, see FSUK2.
(tell him he's dreaming)

Not going to come back to life out of the nu-breaks scene.

IMO.

breakbeat comes and goes in popularity (most breaks still sounds like hardcore (pre jungle) to me tbh).

it's not dead - never will be, maybe hibernating slightly.

Yeah, but to me "breaks" are still the original breaks from the funk/soul tracks they were originally sampled from. Big Beat, at least, stayed closer to this vibe.

Yeah, I dont play any new "breaks" (haven't purchased a "breaks" record since booking Fractured), unless you count AGFA, FK5, Rephrase, Fdel, Qdup, Hai Karate All Stars, Featurecast, Wicked Lester, Aldo Vanucci; the list goes on. These cats do make beats that are closer to what I got into DJ'ing for in the first place, i.e. BPMs, samples, party emphasis, hiphop cred, non-electronic sounding (more than not), etc. You could say they are breakbeat, but so much of their stuff crosses other genres, it'd be pointless. But that's actually what drew me to "breaks" in the first place...the cross-genre aspects. I got bored beyond belief with what breaks, i.e. nu skool, tech funk, progressive, jump-up, epic, whatever had become 3 years ago and, subsequently, went back to what got me into the music in the first place, i.e. funk, soul, disco, ol skool hiphop.

So why try to pigeonhole "breaks". I know when Herc, Bam and Flash first began they didn't have some name for what they did. They just rocked a party.

Be a club DJ, rock the party, whatever. Let the punters sort out the style.

I know I'm stuck in the past and I wear that badge with pride. But I do play new stuff that can be coined "breakbeat" for lack of a better tag...and it is out there in the clubs.

That's what I'm saying. Ringwood North has a huge breaks scene...it's just at people's houses.

The dubstep scene is infringing though...in the comission units. They all be hard down there. Writing beats with Nintendos...playin out at the local scout halls. Petey runs with one of the crews, I hear. Carries a pistol for whippin. He b one hard bearfo.

:)
