Re: Swanston Street Redevelopment
1. put some trees in that arent Plane trees, plus low level planting x bazillion.
2. remove slow walkers
3. less street infrastructure. like not heaps of gutters and steps and different levels and ins and outs parking type things. should do one flat level for whole street including footpaths and have LARGE colour markings on.
4. cars gtfo, buses gtfo, shit taxi drivers gtfo.
5. less crap shops
6. less hot wind and flying dust in summer
7. better food.
8. less people.
9 fix up that god fucking awful aborted 'public' space outside the Westin. (no sand please) make a huge green ramped bank with a gigantic floating oblong or something to obscure the filth building behind. moar trees.
10. stop with the water shortage policy of no greening the parks / fountains in summer thing, its a rubbish minor gesture and means that people with no garden have no chance to get somewhere cool and green if they want to. take the water off industry instead. melbourne looks like a dried out gold rush town when everything is dead.
11. remove QV supermarket to somewhere far far away
12. remove AFL shop from city.
13. ban football
14. ban dudes walking around in pink shorts and brown thongs
15. moar slappers
2. remove slow walkers

Re: Swanston Street Redevelopment
regardless of the options you at least have to have some respect for the council for actually engaging in a dialogue with the community on this one. i'm a bit suprised, but very glad.
you know it seems like things are getting better in that area. case in point was the 2am lock out. everyone threw their hands up, the government saw that and didn't go ahead. tbh i was suprised at that too.

...anyone see the 'dream redevelopment' in the age the other week?
talk of an 'elizabeth st creek' with amsterdam style bridges over it. basically diggin up the road, re opening the williams creek which once flowed there, and creating a big inner city parkland. awesome!

Re: Swanston Street Redevelopment
Melbourne is a bloody well designed city. The subtle things like the 3 block north south and 2 block east west limitations on high rises so that laneways are never overly blocked from the sun.
Swanston St could be better, and we could be more accommodating to bikes. But in terms of pedestrian access and experience, I rate highly.
And park land in the city! Imagine Melbourne if it has parkland.

Imagine how lovely the water would be!! so brown and thick with vile from the Saturday night chuck!! Not naturally flowing into other waterways would mean stagnent crapness.Sustain wrote: ...anyone see the 'dream redevelopment' in the age the other week?

ahh, you must be a journalist, pick out the worst bits and make them seem like the point?
Could always be done better, but come on, parks around melbourne are not bad for choice.

Re: Swanston Street Redevelopment
yeah, i agree, we're pretty spoiled for choice on the cbd fringe, and that doesn't even count inner-city parks like edinburgh gardens. the only real complaint i have about melbourne parks is that the one up the top of napier st on alexandra pde is a bit shit really. but yeah, they've done really well at making heaps of really nice green spaces to spend time in. unfortunately, apart from domain, they seem to put them in the least pt-friendly places possible (victoria st, king st, spring st, etc) but it's not that far so just suck it up and walk you lazy shite.

Re: Swanston Street Redevelopment
that is pretty incoherent, isn't it.
bad:
* the shit little park up the top of napier st next to fitzroy pool
* most parks generally being relatively inconvenient for pt
good:
* lots of them
* generally quite nice
* the lunch i'm about to eat (can't decide what to have tho)

a donk here and there might look pretty good. ive heard they are quite practical and actually improve the usability of their surrounds.
