I emailed Pete about this tune I heard on the Boombox radio show a few years ago. It dropped into the most serious nasty bassline I've heard (think DJ icey - Freaks in da House type bassline.) Pete (I think anway) was a bit hard on himself when he said he wasn't happy with and stopped working on it. Wish he hadn't, but has come out with some good tunes of late.

He's an amazing producer, my favourite of his by a square mile is 'Just press play' - a fine example of electro breaks done well.
Re: bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
So true. When Deviant and I started the stylus parties, it was all about the party and having a smashing time (to the possible detriment of my uni marks.) If the music was dark, nasty, and everyone was having a good time, that's all that mattered.shepherd wrote:want to promote breakbeat, stop calling it 'breakbeat'
call it party music and it's a good start.
Some good discussion on here.

I remember Kraymon released some wicked stuff on En:vision, Plastic Raygun too, and I had this bangin track of his on Boombox which was my pride and joy for a few months of playing.
I forget track names, would have to dig in my collection, or wait until some knowitall looks his discography up on the net, then makes out he knew all along

Re: bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
I can't speak for Melbourne but I know here in Perth that most of the "crew" there were heavily into their breaks have now had kids, gone past the age of 30 ( I know I have) or have got married and are just not into going out to clubs any more. They still love their breaks but just dont go out. All the young kids now coming through haven't been exposed to the sounds like we were earlier this decade with things like the Ministry of Sounds Clubbers Guide to Breaks CD's. These CD's were wicked in that they gave the whole scope of breaks as a whole. Started out party/funky/hip hop, got into the more driving stuff before ending on the techier edge of breaks, but the thing is , no one pidgeon holed the CDs into any sounds, they were just good tunes.
Does Breaks need another commercial(ish) type venture like that to get it back into the limelight? Or would we rather it stay "underground" amongst the heads.
I started a discussion on it on ITM
http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/showth ... p?t=242022
Maybe we need to breed a whole new generation of chin strokers to come through and take the reigns from teh retired chin strokers with kids etc?
I still love my breaks, I still make and dj breaks, but I am also diversifying into other soudns which I am enjoying alot.
Marcus Nago lent me one of his turntables while he is off galavanting overseas and last night I listened to a heap of old tunes and what stood out to me was how simple but effective all the tunes were. Tunes like Terminalhead - Beats Rhymes & Flavour, PMT Gyromancer, Deibeat - Metomorphosis were all so simple, not a whole lot of elements , not alot goign on but so effective in what they were deliveiring. Breaks tunes nowdays suffer from maybe trying too hard to put too much into a tune? Ive definitely taken note .

ok, I don't post in 'ere much, too many forums not enough time...
I play breaks - a lot, just not out in the Melb clubs much. The international Breaks scene is pumping right now, heaps of new producers creating wicked new tunes/angles on the old boomtishboomboomtish thing.
I probably buy 20-30 new breaks tunes a month and am then sent another few as promo - all of it quality IMO, remembering that everybody's taste is different...
I also know a lot of dj's that play breaks, both local and international and they love it - as do the crowds that go.
Nobody plays Breaks anymore? Bollocks IMO
Is it less prevalent? probably, but with new dance genres being created almost weekly and then nights dedicated to these, this is probably happening across the entire range of electronic dance based music.
Breaks FTW!

Re: bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
Very interesting thread.
I haven't posted yet because I guess I'm what people like Karl S would call the 'next gen', and I fucking love breaks more than anything, while I still love so many other genres of EDM...
Yes I'm a little 20y/o baby, and while over the last couple of years going to heaps of breaks parties around Melbs I have met lots of great people, I have noticed that most of the DJs/producers/promoters that are into 'breaks' are on average 10 years older than me. But I much prefer the vibe and types of people at 'breaks' parties at all the RLT events that Dan throws at BA for example to the Electro House crowds full of people my age (mostly jocks/ in pink fluoro 'beaters and blonde chicks with half a brain cell)
But I guess the generational gap is daunting and I often wonder why barely anyone my age is into breaks...even most of my friends (with diverse musical tastes) still don't even have any idea what breaks is, even though I've tried to educate them, because they just aren't plugged into the world of it, apart from going to see a bit of Krafty or Plumps at Parklife or whatever. But in terms of partying, usually involving pills, they still all prefer a house beat.
Maybe its because I grew up on a musical diet of broken beats - my (half)brother who is 35 inherited like 15k when his dad died and spent it all on CDs and comics (and a Porsche branded push bike). He always shared his music with me and his presents were always mixtapes or CDs. Whether it be The Orb, Ninja Tunes stuff, Beats by Dope Demand compilations, James Brown or more rare funk tunes, Drum n Bass, whatever, it was very alternative stuff compared to what ANYONE I knew liked. When I was 10 or younger I was listening to this stuff. In around 2001, year 8 of high school for Media class I used an Aquasky vs Masterblaster track as the soundtrack to one of my animations (and everyone else just called it 'techno').
Its all got to do with the super-fast rise of the popularity of Electronic music in general , and Rock and HipHop artists getting on board over the last 5 years. Most people of my generation have jumped into EDM only really hearing Electro (or trance) sounds. And yet they still claim to have liked the Prodigy for years (but I bet they don't have the Dirtchamber Sessions on CD like me)
Maybe as KS said in his ITM thread there does just need to be a bit more of a mainstream popularity injection, if people really do want breaks to rise up from the "underground" and be like it was a few years ago. But is that really a good thing, the quality of music and the crowds at the parties might decline? There's always a tradeoff for money.... Anyway, I don't care, all i know is if I moved into house, my GF (who is 6yrsolder) would kill me because she loves breaks too
But as Skool of Thought said to me last year after his set, when I asked him about his edit of Wolfgang Gartner's Montezuma "its all 4.4". Don't forget that either, breaks is still in music theory a 4/4 beat, unless you're listening to breaks versions of Waltz music that you count in 3s hahah.
Good music is good music I spose. At least Fidget draws from alot of different genres and the tracks often have breakbeat in there, maybe that will help to bridge the gap. Alot of my friends are loving this stuff.
/end essay, don't hate on me like you would NakedAge

Good post man - I don't think anyone is going to hate on youKaiproject wrote:Very interesting thread.

Great to see a youngster into his breaks too.
In regards to the 'underground' - I truly believe this must exist, and be healthy for a scene to flourish.
You can have all your dudes coming to see Krafty Kuts and other mainstream acts - but you know when the Summadaze crowd has jumped on something that its life is finite. They'll flog it to death, doing the same thing over and over again, then it'll just be over - like it is now - and the cycle must start again.
Underground, mainstream, scene dies, repeat. Underground, mainstream, scene dies, repeat.

Great post Kaiproject. You could attribute the massive success of DnB in Perth to the fact that around the last 90s early 2000's there were a heap of underage raves pushing DnB - thus had a massive following of punters into the genre once they reached legal age. I have no idea what is getting pushed at the underage gigs now but I know that breaks doesnt really get a look in at these events.
I hoping to get over to Melbourne to play soon as well! Melbourne is one of the only Cities in Australia I haven't played at .
