yeah. i could always find beat alot easier.
If I read this correct, then:

4 votes for Beat, 2 votes for Inpress. Beat's running away with it...

I think both are good.... But I do see beat around a lot more.

I did an inpress only ad last week though, only coz Lynty already mentioned our event in his column :)

So I'm really on the fence. I don't think it'll matter. The best case senario would be to do ads both. Are we talking about ads though or are we talking about a feature?

If you can get a sponsor to pay for it then do both:)

I think Beat has more circulation than Inpress, I do see it around more often...I think for maximum exposure it may be the way to go...but then again, I don't know all that much ;)

Save the money and advertise online - print media doesn't have the reach/cut through it used to and most of your target audience are online.

If not, go for Inpress as they have better content integration and will negotiate more bang for your buck.

OR think bigger and go for a daily - MX/Age/Herald Sun ... WAY more circulation.

Both are offering features with the ads. Yeah, best case scenario will be to get a sponsor on board so we can take out ads with both. I'll hopefully know more about this possibility after my meeting at Starlight tomorrow. ITM has already gotten back to me and said they'd love to help the cause, so big ups to them. When I know the full story, you'll all know the full story. 8)

Hmmnn... Beat gets my vote, I think they print more copies, cause I can usually get a copy of Beat if I can't find Inpress.

As for concerns over fitting all the faces onto a cover-shot...
How about a collage of photo-chops, Munted pics & general ugly bastards of the scene... Sort of similar to a High-school Yearbook collage, or the BDO poster.....?
OB, I know you had a particular artist in mind for the flyers, etc.
Would they be up for putting the effort into drawing a cartoon style, class photo of everyone, or is that too much of a hassle..?

Might be best to approach The Age/MX in partnership with Star-light for better credibility & (hopefully....) Cheaper price...,
OR... How about hitting them up 4 a sponsorship? or sourcing a Corporate Sponsor to cover this forsee-able expenditure.

Can any-one think of some Corporate Sponsors that might be willing to jump on board...?

hey eric,

for the age speak to

Andrew Drever
Gary Munro

Herald Sun

Cyclone
Cam Adams

PM me for their emails/numbers if you want them.

Hit up MX via their gig guide section ... and also Citysearch online.

Radio it's worth speaking to Nova and explaining what you are doing ... when thinking of PR/advertising always think about the reach and the potential audience you want to hit - think outside the box! Best approach - speak to one of their direct sales reps and move from there.

No offence but it would be extremely difficult to have a corporate give actual sponsorship (ie dollars) to an event of this scale. It's too small and they run on 6-12 month plans in advance. The best options would be ...

- cig sponsor
- alcohol sponsor

2 easiest ways for quick cash injections ... but the venue might already have deals in place and/or want a cut (as alc. agreement will be based around pouring/pos material).

Thanks for that, Ben. I look forward to getting the details.

Both The Scene and Resident Advisor have just gotten back into contact with me and will be offering their services to the cause. So our online promotion should be pretty good with RA, ITM, The Scene and MB.com all helping out. If the street press side of things could work itself out the same, I'd be stoked beyond belief. Hopefully, the numbers Ben supplies me with will lead to something.

I've had a couple people mention alcohol and cigarette sponsorhship to me. How do people feel about that? It's all good because it goes to the cause, but there's a part of me that doesn't want to take money from these types of companies. They'd expect to get name sponsorship I'd think and then I have a feeling Starlight might not like to be associated with that. I'll know more what they feel about it after my meeting there tomorrow.

a piece of advice if talking to booze companies - they love their house music and the love their female skewed crowds ... be very craful how you explain the event and don't make it too niche in description ... it needs to be edgy but with round edges if you catch my drift.

So we play underground music that everyone from all levels of class get into, especially upper class hotties who like to swerve in short cut skirts and tight tops...we're on the pulse, man! I'm selling this breaks stuff.

The funny thing is that we dont really need sponsorship, but sponsorship will lead to more money being donated. Street press is our number one cost. I dont really think the event would be as successful without ads in either Beat or Inpres or both. Just my opinion though. It's too bad that they're idea of giving to the cause is different to my own, but I understand that they got bills to pay, too, and ads are how they make their money. Oh well...

the only thing stopping street press from donating is probably that if they set a precedent it could backfire on them as some people within the club/entertainment scene aren't as honest as you guys and may attempt to abuse it.

eg - all the tsunami victims gigs that didn't touch base with anyone (punters etc) after the event and let them know how much was donated and where it went etc.

Really? We were quite up front the entire time with the money we donated to World Vision. So much so that I told everyone how unhappy I was with myself for choosing a religious organization over someone like Oxfam. Didn't do enough research on that one, something I'll never do again. We told our crew through email how much we raised (wish it could've been more) and Scotrod dropped the check off. Did people pull off scams or something? If so, that's fucking pitiful.

3 votes for Beat, 2 votes for Inpress. It's a tight race.

It's also good when you explain why you vote for who as that's the really important justification I'm hoping to get out of this. I'll save who I'm voting for until the end, just in case a tie breaker is needed.
BTW I am leaning towards one right now.
Inpress is a better read... beat is more widely distributed...

Beat I guess

Had an exceptionally rad meeting with Starlight yesterday. In their own words, "I've been here for almost 10 years and we've never had someone approach us with an idea like this already organized".

SO BIG UPS EVERYONE SO FAR!!!

I told them everything we want to do and they were more than happy with it. They gave me a mound of paperwork to fill out and then we'll be OFFICIALLY ENDORSED by Starlight Foundation, which is rad in more than a few ways. They've actually got quite a few hook-ups in many different industries and their name does carry a bit of weight. So now we can actually approach various businesses as a Starlight event, not just a charity going towards Starlight. This means that they will bring down a table and people to the event to share their experiences with the punters, which I think is important to get the word out on the important work that they do. They'll also try to add to our total raised by selling their Starlight wands at the event, which are those things that you see all over Fed Square at Christmas time.

If we can raise $10,000, that will be 2 wishes we have supplied to 2 different children. I'll have a full run-down on what the wishes are made up of and some more info from the org just so everyone knows exactly what and how the money is going to be donated. They're totally down for a check presentation ceremony at their Starlight room at the Royal Childrens Hospital, so after it's all said and done, I'd love peeps from this site to come down for a little Melbourne Beats PR.

I'll keep you all in the loop.

Don't stress about it, OB, there's always going to be someone who ain't happy - you can't please everyone!

Similarly, you can't blame people for having and voicing an opinion, as long as it is done in an appropriate way.

E.g. Personally, I would have preferred the night to be as it was last year - i.e. 3 rooms of different breakbeats (breaks in the narrow sense of the word). That way you had space for the deeper and proggy breaks, electro or techy breaks and the main room breaks. BUT, I do understand your point of view and I love the fact that we will be raising money for charity therefore I will support the night in whatever incarnation it takes.

Just talked with OB1, and after a day of fierce debate - we have all reached a great equilibrium.
This will be a fantastic event, with every facet of breaks represented.
Everyone will be happy with the results, which really have not changed a great deal from the initial meeting.
Bigger line-up than last year, more time, more crews, more DJ's.

I'm really excited about it, and it's looking to be one of Melbourne's greatest parties of all time - all for a very worthwhile cause.

Nice work OB1, and the rest of the crew.
You have the full support of Gimme a Break! and i'm glad we can say what needs to be said without any gripes - even if we don't always agree on everything.
Man, I'm spent now though!

You guys have one of the best parties of the year coming up in the next few months - MBU - so put your all into it, and lets show them what we are made of.

See you then. :D

Drew, thanks so much. Well spoken.

Alright, peeps. Here's an important change to the event:

BREAKS ROOM HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE UPSTAIRS DANCEHALL (MAIN) ROOM!

This is the room where we had the meeting and where Jungle Run just had Sidewinder play. Big fat Nexo sound system, right next to where the BBQ will be held starting at 5pm. This room will run from 5pm-7am...then move downstairs to the basement for the MBU After-Party from 7am-12pm. Do the math, that's 19 hours of Melbourne's best breaks DJ's. Phew!

DNB ROOM HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE BASEMENT!

Big fat Nexo sound system and Dan Finna and myself will personally do a sound check down there before the event and have extra gear brought in if needed to make every dnb head happier than the upside down gnomes. This room will run from 6pm-7am and will then make way for the official After Party from 7am-12pm. Again, the math...that's 13 hours of Melbourne's best dnb DJ's. Phew, again!

FUNK, HIP HOP & DANCEHALL ROOM WILL STAY PUT UPSTAIRS!

Sound system will be brought in, riddums will roll and Drew will be sporting fake dredlocks in the hopes that we'll let him dance on stage with us. This room will run from 7pm-6am. Oh, the math...that's 11 hours of Melbourne's best cross dressing, lipstick wearing, record spinning weirdos. Can I get a double Phew?

Hope that's good for ya.

So whether yer into hard breaks, phat dancehall, liquid dnb or whatever plus more, you'll find it here on this night. While also helping a great cause.
